暂定目录:

Prologue

How did this project/ book came to be? What brought Alizée to leave everything behind in a storage space and hit the road in a country where she doesn’t speak the language?

This introduction invites the reader into Alizée’s world and mind, and get accustomed to her personality and her dreams.

1. Shanghai, where it all began

Shanghai has been Alizée’s home for 6 years, and this is where the majority of her network and friends are. We get to meet some of them, before she’s setting off!

Meet Alizée in Shanghai, and get to know her through her daily habits in her in her Shanghai home as she’s building out her home on wheels for the coming months.

Before getting on the road, she’s sitting down with some of the key players in sustainability from the city. How do they perceive sustainability in China, the customers they interact with, the trend and so much more.

2. Kailu! Let’s go.

Time to move out of the Shanghainese lane house into the car. Organizing the moving truck, and storage place with some of the larger pieces. Making sure that everything in the van has a place. Difficult to fit 6 years into a car! Khailou, the rescue dog, is not very comfortable with his home being empty. What is happening? Time to say goodbye to friends and family, her home of two years, and Shanghai, her home city for 6 years.

Let the adventure begin!

3. The Road trip

First days on the road, and we’re already meeting interesting people and discover ancient crafts in small villages between Shanghai & Chengdu.

4. Sichuan: Meeting the green entrepreneurs in Chengdu

The incredible scenery of Sichuan province is not foreign for many. More than the scenery, the mountains host a myriad of inspirational entrepreneurs, creators and innovators.

We would love to stay in the mountains, but the entrepreneurs are based in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province. As we sit down at a local café with Zero Waste entrepreneurs, we receive a better understanding of how sustainability is slowly making its way to central China, and through different generations.

As we walk amongst the rice fields known to the internet sensation Liziqi, we see that sustainability never really left the mindset of the locals here.

We talk about our lost connection with nature, living and eating according to the seasons, and happiness.

5. Qinghai: Authentic Luxury

What is the true meaning of luxury today? As luxury brands grow in size, and become more accessible to more people, the question arises: How sustainable are those products today?

Are we paying for the brand name, or are we actually investing in the ‘savoir-faire’ and the craft that goes into the products?

According to us, Norlha is the definition of true luxury. Alizée’s love story with Norlha goes back to 2019 when discovering the brands in the heights of Shangri-la. Based out of Qinghai, Norlha has over 5 stores in the neighboring provinces, and selling through thoughtful boutiques in Shanghai and Beijing.

She’s excited to meet the community who are living their craft and bringing it onto the market, while remaining authentic to who they are, and what the brand represents.

Not only will we immerse ourselves in an incomparable vast and open landscape with the van, but be ready to enter the world of Norlha and its treasures.

6. Gansu

Gansu Province has been important in Chinese history as the main northern passage to the outside world, and the Silk Road and the Yellow River runs through it. For tourists, it is the home of popular Silk Road sights, from the Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang in the west to the Bingling Grottoes in the major city of Langhou in the east.

Alizée meets her friend Myles in Lanzhou and tempt to travel to the south of the province.

7. Ningxia: sustainable & natural wines

With a rising appreciation for good wines amongst Chinese people, Ningxia is one of the regions known for good and natural wines.

Since it is a rather young industry, sustainable practices were a focus from the beginning.

Thanks to some of our friends back in Shanghai, we were put in touch with some incredible wine makers, who share with us their visions and practices to keep the earth balanced in to produce high-quality grapes.

We are reminded here again that good things, good produce, takes time and effort, and most of all, passion. The right product deserves the right price, and understanding what we are paying for. True sustainability is achieved through respecting the triple bottom line: people, planet, and profits.

8. Beijing: young changemakers from Beijing

The capital city has been a great breeding ground for entrepreneurs with a more purpose-driven, sustainability mindset.

When Alizée started out her startup, she came up to Beijing to scout and meet similar entrepreneurs like her. She met Elsa from Go Zero Waste, Carrie from The Bulk House, was invited to see how a compound invested into a large composting infrastructure. Went to dinner in one of the best vegetarian restaurants of Beijing, and many more experiences.

In this episode, we’ll get to catch up with everyone, and see how far they’ve come, what their plans are for the future and venture on other similar adventures in the city.

9. Yunnan: the richness of our backyard.

Yunnan is special. There are few words to explain the sentiment that comes when meeting the changemakers in this part of China. Alizée meets her friend Leo from Green Solutions China who brings her around the province to show how ancient crafts already embody the principles of sustainability, and how we can reintegrate these principles in our modern society. Can we?

Once in Dali, Alizee meets Rio the founder behind rio hilo, a sustainable garment brand made from natural hemp grown in the region. Rio started her entrepreneurial journey as a baker, and settled in Dali opening Simple Stone Bakery. Pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved with wheat, hemp and all the other resources that are grown in the region, she build a whole community around these values. We have arrived in Dali, and we’ll sit down with Rio and live through her eyes in this small town in central China.

10. Conclusion

In this part, we share our closing thoughts on the first part of the KAILU project. What were the findings, the surprises, and what is next?
