本书与《鼠族》以及《我在伊朗长大》一样，是一本自传型的政治漫画小说。Riad Sattouf是由一心梦想成为独裁者的叙利亚籍父亲以及来自布列塔尼的母亲养大。作者透过幽默感以及敏感度来叙述他在利比亚的童年以及家族。在第一册里，作者描述了1978年至1984年的童年。当时是卡扎菲（Gaddafi）的利比亚以及阿萨德（Hafez al-Assad）的叙利亚。Riad 出生雨利比亚的Tripoli，当时他的父亲是一位老师。父亲来自贫穷的背景，一直对于政治感兴趣，于是从小就灌教儿子关于伟大的阿拉伯独裁者、现代主义的象征以及阳刚的权力。
1984年，他们全家搬到叙利亚，与其他Sattof家族重聚。Riad的金发引发其他表亲的取笑，而在同时，Riad必须接受传统农夫的严厉生活。他的父亲只有一个想法：让Riad在叙利亚考上学校，成为一位受过教育、现代的阿拉伯人，代表阿拉伯的未来。
关于作者：
Riad Sattouf 是在法国一位非常成功的漫画家。他的作品包括Retour au Collège、Pascal Brutal以及La Vie Secrète des Jeunes（许多在德国、意大利以及西班牙也翻译出版）。他同时是一位电影导演，他的作品Les beaux gosses曾获得2010年Cèsar最佳新人奖。他的下一部电影Jacky au royaumes des filles在2014年1月上映。
