Kay has been growing steadily since her first book, REDEMPTION, was published by Transita in 2007.Transita was a very small UK publisher who, nevertheless, sold out their print-run of 3,000 copies. The rights were then sold to St Martin’s Press in the US, and they published the book under a different title, namely, IF NOT LOVE (2008). Modest sales ensued but the new name was adopted by the Czech, Polish and Portuguese houses, who have published comparatively recently. This clever and moving look at the meaning of marriage in the modern world seems to touch many nationalities.
 
Kay’s second book, called WHAT THE HEART KNOWS, was published in Poland and, to greater acclaim, in Germany by Rowholt (2010), who delayed their publication for a significant book club deal of 10,000 copies.  They then sold approximately 8,000 copies of the hardcover.  
 
At this point, Kay subtly altered her writing style to appeal to a broader audience, and Hodder came on board. With HER GIANT OCTOPUS MOMENT, she reached the long list of the “Richard and Judy book club” – a national TV show which promotes books – and is being warmly supported by one of our major book retailers, WHSmith’s.  Hodder have nearly 10,000 copies in print, which is most encouraging at this stage, with publication on Thursday.
You may find it useful to know that the next book is already well advanced and Kay is finalising an outline. So far, it is untitled, but it will be very much in the spirit of HER GIANT OCTOPUS MOMENT, however the theme will be based on adoption. So there will be another great child protagonist, a messy world created by adults, and a heart-warming resolution.   This will be another accessible story which delivers a big emotional impact.

Oh my goodness; how this book moved me. Five stars really isn't quite enough to sum up how much I enjoyed reading this novel even though I had an inkling all the way through (based on the title) what was going to happen. I reached the end with a tear in my eye and closed the book feeling very emotional. At the heart of the story is Scout - who isn't named after a character in `To Kill A Mockingbird' but after Demi Moore and Bruce Willis' daughter as she mentions a handful of times in the story. Even perhaps this on its own reveals where Scout's true emotions lie, because of her love for learning and reading; showing the differences between her own nature and that of her mother's..all the way through I thought Scout was marvellous. She was such a wonderfully written character and I could genuinely visualise her whilst I was reading.

This is such a magnificent novel and I would recommend everyone to read it! Such a beautiful yet sad story.

What a great title for a book, it most certainly caught my attention and made me look twice, and reading the synopsis convinced me that Her Giant Octopus Moment by Kay Langdale was going to be just my cup of tea…Scout Simpson, named after Demi Moore and Bruce Willis' daughter and not taken from Harper Lee's novel as most people would assume, is one of the most wonderful child characters I've ever come across…A story about motherhood about survival and about surrogacy. A story about choices and why people make them, and their consequences. Just what makes a good mother? Is it someone who is there when you finish school? Someone who makes sure you are fed and your teeth are brushed? Is is someone who brings adventure into your life, and shows you new places and experiences? Kay Langdale draws fabulous characters, both Scout and Joanie are lovable and real. Mr Groves, the ex butler who lives in the flats in Birmingham is beautifully described, a gentleman who teaches Scout about the finer things in life, and Mr Mohammed, the shopkeeper who makes sure she is learning something new every day. Both funny and poignant, warm and witty, with some fabulous characters and a thought provoking plot line - I enjoyed the read immensely.

This is a lovely, touching read, with moments of emotional intensity and humour, and some great characters. Scout is the best by far, she is so lovely, such a great girl; intelligent, inquisitive, caring, and very strong…A moving, thought-provoking, character-led novel by a talented writer.
