1938年。希特勒的扩张主义政策同时引起愤怒以及敬佩，尤其是在赫尔辛基的“星期三俱乐部”里。这是一个绅士俱乐部，会员都是律师Claes Thune的老朋友。他们聚会、讨论政治、喝酒，但是这一年的政治动荡大到影响到这群朋友的凝聚力。Thune才刚回国也才刚离婚，他这几年都在莫斯科以及斯德哥尔摩担任外交官。他继续运作他的律师事务所，但是完全失去了他的热情。外面的政治焦虑和他本身生活中的混乱似乎相对应。幸好他有他可靠的秘书Matilda。
有一天，Matilda没有来上班——她平常都是早上8点准时报到，但是这一天，她没有出现。Thune一开始很生气，但是越晚他越开始担心。因为电话上联系不到她，于是Thune决定亲自到她家。接着，故事回顾到八个月前。Thune的管家生病了，所以换成Matilda准备星期三俱乐部的点心以及饮料。
在她的优雅的外观低下，Matilda被她芬兰内战的回忆折磨。她17岁的时候经历过她接下来一生都想忘记的事情。 星期三俱乐部的成员总共有六位，他们都大约40几岁。除了Thune之外，成员包括精神病医生Lindemark、记者Riman、商人Gronros、医生Arelius以及演员Jary。除了Thune以及Gronros的声音之外，其他人的Matilda都没有听过。突然，Matilda听到她曾希望永远不想再听到的声音。这个人是精神病医生Lindemark，也是负责Matilda曾待过的囚犯集中营的人。只是这一次，她不再是无助的受害者。
星期三俱乐部里面的成员虽然都个个友善以及温和，但是底下却充满戏剧以及焦虑。对Matilda来说，她的一生都充满了挣扎。他亲爱的哥哥曾经跟她说过：“人生是一场梦，一个无边界的蜃景”。这是一本关于过去，以及如何从过去的错误学习的小说。
关于作者：Kjell Westö住在赫尔辛基。他在1986年开始出版作品，出版过诗集、短篇小说集以及长篇小说。他写的五本设置于赫尔辛基小说的成功证实了他是瑞典语言地区最成功的作者之一。他在2006年写的Där vi en gang gått (Where Once We Walked)获得芬兰最权威的文学奖，Finlandia奖。
